UPH, A Promising and Memorable University

"Education is very important for me because it has helped me to shape my character and mindset as well as enhance soft skills. These three are very useful in pursuing one's career," Irene Ursula, UPH's Accounting Alumni explains. During her education at UPH, Irene admitted that she's gained more than a handful of valuable lessons beyond academic, but also from a character and personality perspective. Irene's journey at UPH has also helped her develop the skills and competencies needed in her career today.

The trials Irene's faced has allowed her to taste victory. If you've heard of Beautyhaul, Somethinc & Glowinc Potion, you have just witnessed Irene's masterpiece. PT BEAUTE HAUL INDONESIA, one-stop beauty solution for local and international buyers, is Indonesia's leading beauty products renowned in various e-commerce platforms. Irene is still active in handling these products' branding and concept & product development sections. Her persistence has resulted in her ability to organize and lead a team and providing education for those who embark on the journey with her.

In facing the challenges, Irene sticks to a few core values : Collaboration, Responsibility, Eccentric, Agility, Toughness & Efficiency. These values started as Irene studies at UPH. “To be very honest with you, I am really inspired by Mr. Mochtar Riady. Back in the days, he would gave speeches about how we should dare to think about big things and be courageous to fight for the dreams we have within us," says Irene.

For Irene, UPH has become a central piece that has grown her to be where she is today. Irene hopes that UPH would continue to educate and shape its students to grow holistically as they grow to be future leaders. “UPH is a very great place for you to study, learn & play at the same time,” – Irene Ursula.

Kebahagiaan Menjalani Karier Yang Sesuai Dengan Impian

However, everything changed when Feli decided to join the Student Executive Board (BEM-UPH), Student Consultative Council (MPM-UPH), and conduct events on campus. The accumulation of all these small decisions have lead Feli to say, “it has totally changed my life". Introducing Indonesian Comfort Food Abroad, Dennis Oswald Tannos Develops Galada.id

Dennis Oswald Tannos, alumnus to UPH Informatics Engineering cohort 2008, Founder and CEO of Galada, has succeeded in serving Indonesian food in ready-to-eat packages. Galada has been tried by customers in more than 40 cities in Indonesia in more than 6 countries around the world as its menus are easy to serve anytime anywhere. Dennis' successful journey started from his regular errands of sharing food with neighbors and friends. From there, Dennis received meaningful inputs on the flavor as well as the idea to make his home-cook food a solution for those who have limited cooking skills or time.

“It all started from neighbors and close friends: my wife and I have always loved sharing home-cook food. Not long after, our neighbors started ordering our food professionally to share with their extended family. That's when my wife and I started seeing the need to innovate our packaging so that everyone can enjoy it - even those who are out of town. Through Galada, I want to be a part of the story where people can taste the diversity of Indonesian food. The flavor I aim to bring from Galada is Indonesian comfort food that reminds people of their hometown so that Indonesian cuisine can be recognized worldwide,” Dennis explains.

Starting a business certainly has its own set of challenges. And as Dennis admits, includes menu innovations so that customers will stay curious and reorder from them. Luckily for Dennis, the friendly environment and good spiritual guidance he got at UPH has provided him with great support and resilience to continue striving for Indonesia. Continuous support from his family has also pushed Dennis to grow his business responsibly and be dependent on God.

“Studying at UPH has shaped who I am today, especially through my organizational experience at BEM-UPH. BEM-UPH has made my days more colorful and exciting, especially through the friends I've made - both on and off campus. Needless to say, I'm proud to be part of UPH," Dennis concluded with a light laugh.

Educating & Developing Potentials in the Field of Technology, Juventia Vicky Reaches Out Through Hacktiv8

The development of technology in Indonesia has experienced a huge leap these past two decades. And our need for reliable back-end developers are undeniable, especially with this rapid technological advancement. She is Juventia Vicky, UPH's Applied Communication Science alumni cohort 2007, who, among the many, is called to prepare beginners to become developers who are ready to work in the technology field. Vicky is trusted to coordinate admission, marketing, business, operations, and human resources departments and develop Hacktiv8 Indonesia, an online education program especially designed for this purpose. Vicky believes that one way to make an impact for a place (or even a country) is to focus on leadership development.

“For me personally, I believe that it is very important to understand the 'why' behind everything I do. By understanding the reasons why I do something, I will be able to sustainably motivate myself because I see the impact I can make for the future. The 'why' gives me the energy to achieve things that people see as impossible. With that said, my team and I does not only want to provide hard-skills for our students at Hacktiv8. We also want to see them have a transformational mindset so that in the end they will be motivated to maximize their potential too. We want them to understand their 'why' too - so at Hacktiv8, we have counselors to help students get to know themselves along the way,” Vicky explains.

For this Kalimantan born-and-raised lady, studying at UPH was a leap of faith. Getting out of her comfort zone is a huge decision to make, especially having to leave her family and live alone at a different city by her own. However, Vicky believes that education is an important factor that will help her to develop and have a better quality of life. Thus, choosing UPH was undoubtedly the best decision she's made.

“I learnt a lot at UPH, especially in terms of organization and leadership. Taking part in student organization activities available does not only train me to do my best or carry out an event until it is rightfully finished, but also how we help each other to grow, both individually and together as a team, with greater goals in mind. It was during those days when I was entrusted to be the chairman of the Department of Student Association (HMJ). Of course I refuse when my senior asked me to pursue the position at first - I wasn't the type of person who is skilled at public speaking, let alone to enjoy appearing in front of public. But I am grateful that she has not stopped convincing me that I am capable and will be equipped for this role. In fact, my lecturers also encouraged me. At that time, one of my lecturers said jokingly, 'If you don't take the chairman role, I won't to talk to you anymore,'" Vicky retells, a light laugh accompanies her story.

Being a teacher means a life time commitment, for they do not only teach practical knowledge, but also in becoming a role model and friend for their students. This commitment is what Heinz Pearly Wokas, UPH's Alumnus to Master of Educational Technology cohort 2008, continues to live wholeheartedly, responsibly and persistently as he responds to God's calling.

“I consider myself to be highly blessed to have the opportunity to both study and work in an institution that really cares about their vision and mission. Yayasan Pelita Harapan (YPPH)'s vision and mission are in line with my personal vision and mission, thus not having too much difficulty in adjusting them with my calling. Sharpening Time-Management Skills Since University, Daniel Moeis Handles Multiple Projects Today

“One value that I still hold on to is actually the quote UPH used to display on its entrance door saying, 'Responsibility Begins With Me'. A lot of people are picky about work these days: we tend to want an easy job, one that will give us profit quickly, and so on. However, I believe that in whatever is entrusted to me, I have to start taking responsibility for myself. I must be able to show that any given job can be completed quickly and well. The rest depended on an effective, efficient, honest work ethic and willingness to learn new things," Daniel says.

He is Daniel Moeis, UPH Architecture cohort 2005 alumni, currently working as Triniti Land's Marketing Director. Daniel is currently responsible for a 150 hectares property development at several parts of Indonesia including Jakarta, Tangerang, Batam, Bogor and Lampung. And with such a tall order at hand, he does not only need to hold his principles close, but also puts God and family first. Daniel admits that far greater than his career, he desires to make help others and make their life easier.

“I wanted to help others, yes. But with that, I also have obstacles to come over. The first obstacle lands upon my ability to give equal attention and time for each project in order for all to get the best results. I believe that previous and current projects alike deserved dedication. The second obstacle requires me to learn again, as it requires me to be able to bring these projects to compete in the online market. Especially with the pandemic at hand, face-to-face activities increasingly limited so it is important for us to figure out how to sell regardless of the time and place constraints,” explained Daniel. Daniel believes that his education at UPH has prepared him to give his best at his current career. For him, UPH did not only provided him with practical knowledge and a wide network support, but also opportunities to practice the soft skills that he still uses in his work today.

"There were a lot of memorable experiences during my time at UPH. One that came up to my mind immediately was the opportunity to join UPH Student Executive Board (BEM-UPH) and the UPH Student Representative Council (MPM-UPH). I learned a lot from these two organizational experiences, especially when I had to prioritize my coursework but still had to keep up with my commitment to contribute to these student organizations. Time management is indeed important and I still find it very applicable in my chosen career. Keep going UPH!” Daniel says enthusiastically.

Kerry – as he is commonly known among his colleagues – is used to facing various challenges in his work. He admits that the heaviest of them happened these past decade: transitioning to digitalization for its sales process, the emergence of electric vehicle, post-pandemic market conditions, and supply shortages due to the semiconductor crisis that occurred globaly – there is no easy way out from any of these. But Kerry has been willing to work on being a leader since his undergraduate education at UPH. Life has forged him to be as grounded as he is today “I came from a farming family in a remote village in East Java. My parents were vegetable traders from one market to another and none of us has ever thought about working as a professional in Jakarta. That condition actually motivated me to get the opportunity to study in Jakarta, in hopes that one day I can get a good career and bring a good example for our village back home,” Kerry explains, his voice filled with determination. Kerry managed to get a full scholarship from Lippo Group to study at UPH. And as he's admitted, he has never forgotten the memories of his education at UPH.

“The 4 years of studying at UPH have provided me with many interesting and memorable experiences, one of which is the close friendship we've built among students, be it our seniors or juniors - we were all involved as one big family: we collaborate hand in hand to make UPH known amongst Indonesia's higher education. Fun fact, UPH was the place where I took the elevator for the first time, received a birthday cake for the first time, and got into a luxury car (namely a Mercedes-Benz C180) owned by my friend for the first time too! I hope that UPH will continue to be a place of excellence, one that produces academically trustworthy graduates as much as their character is,” Kerry concluded.

Hard Working and Always Ready to Give His Best, Roberto Saputra Is Entrusted to be PT Smartfren Telecom Tbk.'s Chief Brand Officer

As one of the very few alumnus to UPH's Industrial Engineering first cohort in 1994, Roberto Saputra had a long-lasting impression of UPH. The bond he's built with other students makes Roberto grateful for the opportunity he's had to study at UPH. “When I was about to go to university, there were not a lot of private universities that had Industrial Engineering. Not long after, I heard that UPH have just opened for its very first students and UPH has Industrial Engineering too! I was already interested in joining UPH when I found out that UPH's vision and mission aligned with mine, so going to UPH was definitely an easy choice. I can understand that being the first batch to anything can be a dilemma, but after experiencing the education system UPH has, I was really impressed by the relationship we've built among students and lecturers: our interactions became more flexible due to our small numbers. I also experienced learning at Dynaplast and a parking facility that got transformed into classes (now building B), so it was very easy for us to get to know each other, even students from other majors," Roberto explains.

Currently, Roberto is entrusted to be PT Smartfren Telecom Tbk.'s Chief Brand Officer. His main responsibilities includes increasing consumer interest in internet products and solutions (brand building) and ensuring that these products offered are known and relevant to their target market (marketing and communications). Furthermore, Roberto expects his team to help him keep being updated with the trends and technological updates in order for him to be able to make rightful decisions regarding consumer behavior and dealing with competitors.

“My father is the person who played a big role in motivating me to strive forward. He was one of UPH's lecturers too actually," Roberto says with a chuckle. "We always went to campus together and even though we didn't talk much, I saw what he did for the family. My father is a hard worker: he doesn't complain much and he always wants to give the best for his family," Roberto further retells.

Roberto also believes that in chasing his career, it is important to have integrity, the desire to keep learning, working hard, and willingness to be a blessing wherever God tells us to go. Without these values, we will not be able to give our best. “Dream high, believe that all things are possible! Treat the difficulties we face today as opportunities to become better people. We just need to shift our mindset and response to every problem a little bit and we'll succeed," Roberto closes.

Director of PT Gowa Makassar Tourism Development Tbk, Iqbal Farabi, Maximizes Opportunities Through IT

“When I first joined GMTD, the first change I did was maximizing the use information technology – one to which the Millenials would call, 'creating content'. I start encouraging the team to use social media including Instagram, TikTok, podcasts, and other channels to keep up with the crowd. The result of this optimization is extraordinary, as we grow to become more and more dependent on IT. From there, GMTD receives double the attention and our sales has been increasing too,” Iqbal explains, regarding the approach he uses to raise public awareness. He is Iqbal Farabi, UPH's Alumnus to both Law undergraduate (cohort 1996) and Master of Law (cohort 2002). Iqbal is currently entrusted to develop PT Gowa Makassar Tourism Development Tbk (GMTD), one of Lippo Group's newest property project in Makassar, South Sulawesi. This responsibility is certainly challenging anyone, especially when we add other competitor and the people's purchasing power into the equation. What's more though, Iqbal also has to be more flexible in his work because he has to work remotely from Jakarta due to the pandemic situation. For Iqbal, the support from his parents, wife and children is central. They did not only give him purpose, but also joy in everything he does. Iqbal believes that in addition to being honest, hardworking, willingness to learn, and sincerity, his parents and family is his focus today. “When I joined UPH in 1996, my parents were the ones who encouraged me to take legal education. Their hopes for me to succeed were high at that time. After more than 20 years, I see that their hopes and dreams came to life, one of which is achieved by sending me to UPH,” continued Iqbal. For students who are continuing their education, Iqbal advised, “Be either smart or active in campus organizations. UPH and its network will help for you to be able to find your way in society. You would've missed a lifetime opportunity if you do not maximize the knowledge and network you've gained at UPH."

David Widyanto, UPH's Product Design Alumni Who Constantly Challenges Himself to Get Out of His Comfort Zone

“One of the most memorable experiences I've had at UPH was during Product Design workshop, building something from purely raw materials has its own satisfaction - one that can't be put into. Although I have got to be honest: all that fun has to be paid with holes on your shirt from welding splashes and sawdust scent on your body even after 48 hours of the event,” David says, a light laughter accompanied his story. David Widyanto, UPH's Product Design Alumnus cohort 2002 as well as Masters in Industrial Engineering cohort 2009, is not only contributing to the society through teaching for UPH Product Design, but also in charge of Axocraft's product development and operational – a workshop that provides small-scale production and consulting services David and his colleagues pioneered in 2013. David admits that from time to time, he had to be in charge of Axocraft's administration, accounting, and marketing. These three elements, when combined with background education in Product Design and Industrial Engineering, brings challenges unimaginable. However, with great interest and thirst in learning, David stood up to his responsibilities and keeps growing in the field of his career. To David, UPH has not only been the place for him to gain knowledge, but also a place that has forged him into a servant leader. David believes that with the right support system, he will be able to continue giving impact to those around him. “For me, UPH is like my second home - or more like my second office because I still spend my time to teach here. And since my education days at UPH, I have witnessed how UPH's vision and mission has given birth to leaders and I have never doubted UPH's ability in this regard,” concluded David.

“I believe that as human beings we learn the most from our failures. Thus, don't be afraid to fail when suggesting ideas. Instead, we have to be resilient in order to produce the best. And of course, being humble also adds to our value too! We should not give in. But rather, we should help those who needed our help,” Pradhana confidently delivers when asked about the values he holds during his university and career.

As a Managing Director to Magnus Digital Agency & Consultancy, perseverance and humility are the two values Pradhana Harsaputera, UPH's Communication Sciences alumni cohort 2005 hold close to his heart. As a person, he is challenged to be able to both understand concepts taught in class as well as create the best ideas to make UPH proud.

For fellow students who are now learning online, Pradhana hopes that you will determine your goal at the beginning of the semester and update regularly if you are on track, to adjust yourself to make a good time-schedule (including a daily, weekly, and time-blocking schedule) so you'll know which you should prioritize, make your study room as comfortable as you can to support your online learning, actively participate in your online classes – including forming communities and ask questions, and don't forget to be ready to fail and share your ideas because that is when you'll gain knowledge.
