Doing actuary work at a professional company renown to the world ain’t easy. Rheza believes that having soft skill ability is important, including but not limited to logical thinking, leadership, citizenship, English proficiency, and communication skill. This UPH Mathematics alumni cohort 2012 is currently working at Price Waterhouse Coopers Singapore as Senior Actuarial Services Associate.
“Each of the skills I obtain during my studies at UPH Mathematics. Especially in my minor, Business Mathematics, which was a double degree program with Management major as well. I’ve had so much to learn through those two degrees,” Rheza says.
According to Rheza, taking his studies at UPH has encouraged him even further to become work in actuary, both academically and not. Not only is actuary major not readily available in all universities in Indonesia and how the lecturers helped him to prepare himself for certification exams, but also the collaboration with third parties to enlarge UPH’s actuary graduates, including READI Project from Canada.
According to Rheza, these plus points gives UPH Mathematics graduates a plus points when they approach companies to work with. “At the company I work with, 70% of its employees are international graduates. Those of us who graduated from UPH are limited to 3 people including myself. But praise be to God almighty, we can all work up to the company standards. A few months ago I was even privileged to join a secondment program for 3,5 months in Hong Kong to help work on a project,” Rheza admits.
The high job demand didn’t make Rheza give in nor overwhelmed in handling them. In fact, he was used to good time management since college. Other than doing a double degree major, Rheza turns to have experienced being a leader to Mathematics Students’ Association leader. Rheza treated this experience as an initial simulation to managing multiple workloads at the same time.
“I was blessed because UPH gave me an opportunity to gain organizational experience other than academic knowledge. I used to think that what I learnt at college wouldn’t be as useful, but I guess it was otherwise,” Rheza reminisced.
He also encouraged his junior to develop their skills as much as they can to prepare themselves for their work. “One of the most important thing is to establish good connection with a lot of people in the organization for there will be a lot of benefit you can get from there,” Rheza closes.
