Currently speaking, data is one of the most important things in the life of a company – especially in an online-based business. Data is heavily relied on e-commerce companies to increase their service and provide convenience for customers. Take the process of searching and purchase made by customer – the amount of transaction made it impossible to find a pattern of purchase manually. Therefore, data processing and pattern finding for large amount of number requires a mathematics model, one in which a Data Scientist can provide. Abe Vallerian, UPH’s Applied Mathematics alumni cohort 2011, shares his experience in research and data processing – something that any Data Scientists will do.
“My job is providing convenience for customer to find the product they want or needed to buy. The way I do it is by making a mathematics model based on the data in order to increase customer service,” Abe says.
Being the Senior Data Scientist at Tokopedia, his responsibility is predominantly research. Research is not an easy job. With all the uncertainty revolving around our world towy, sometimes it doesn’t go the way Abe expected it to go. Furthermore, the quick growth of knowledge requires Abe to be resilient. In order to be able to follow the technological updates, Abe often access journals, academic articles, or a more advanced articles in order to implement a more advanced model.
“I also frequent discuss elements we could use to improve our model performance with the business or product team. We also add new initiative ideas that could help customers,” Abe added.
Soft skills and mathematic science are two important things to Abe in the journey of his career. This gold medalist in National MIPA Olympics 2014 admits that the basic mathematic science he gained from UPH was fundamental in his profession. An in-depth understanding of Mathematics is required to understand how the method applies to the model and how to incorporate them into the system. Through his job Abe admits to have gained a lot of useful insights for life and career.
“The most important thing is not boast about your achievements – there will probably be someone better than you. Instead, be humble and keep on learning,” Abe closes.
