Anthony Winza Probowo, Alumnus to UPH Faculty of Law cohort 2007 is not only entrusted as the member of commission C at the Regional People’s Representative Assembly (DPRD) and member of Regional Regulation Forming Board (Bappemperda DPRD DKI Jakarta) but also to represent Partai Solidaritas Indonesia (PSI) for DPRD Jakarta 2019-2024. Anthony’s daily workload is tuning in to the people’s aspiration and translating them into local regulations, oversees the implementation of local government programs, and supervises the regional apparatus and related BUMD performances in Greater Jakarta.
Working at the government has been a dream of his since elementary school, something he believed is God-given and therefore something he must take as a responsibility. Anthony admits that there was a lot of rebuke and pressure that he must go through since he holds double minority identity (being a Chinese descent and Christian). But Anthony didn’t back down. He kept striving forward in serving the community, becoming the light as well as an impact in the political scene.
Armed with an undergrad education at UPH and government full-scholarship graduate program at Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, America, Anthony is sure that he can carry out his role well in the legislative. “At UPH, I learnt a lot – especially regarding to constitutional law. This knowledge is helpful for me to understand the governmental structure and the relationship between the regional government towards the central government,” he admits.
During his undergrad studies, Anthony took part in a lot of debate contests. Through his persistence, he achieved first winner to several legal debate including the one at Indonesia’s Constitutional Court, Padjajaran University as well as the University of Indonesia. In being a representative for the community, Anthony holds one value: integrity. According to Anthony, he believed that the more he tried working with integrity, the more he will face pressure.
“Just as salmon swam against the current, though not easy, so should we survive ‘til the end. We should not let the pressure, nor the current make us pessimistic, scared, or make the decision of going with the flow. Faith is not enough – we’ve got a part that we must do. I often take David and Goliath as an example: when David defeats Goliath, David still must take his part to swing and throw that stone towards Goliath. Whether that stone killed Goliath or not is God’s part, but David still had to take his part in faith to act,” Anthony says.
