Building a Reputation for Healthcare Services in Indonesia through Cutting-Edge Knowledge and Dedication

"The biggest challenge I face today is keeping up with the latest advancements in healthcare and ensuring that we can compete in providing the best service," says Dr. Stella Kawilarang, M. Biomed, SpOG, a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) class of 2006. Currently, Stella works as a specialist obstetrician and founder of Marvella Mom and Baby Clinic in Bali.

The demand to keep up with the recent advances in the field of healthcare pushes Stella to always strive to improve her expertise. Personally, she feels the need to assure the public that medical practice in Indonesia is on par with international standards. "Many patients believe that healthcare services abroad are superior to those in Indonesia. Hence, I want to change that perception," added Stella.

Becoming a doctor has been Stella's childhood aspiration. Through this profession, she can help many people and bring joy to the patients under her care. This is why Stella pursued further education to become a specialist obstetrician. Stella finds immense happiness in witnessing her patients meet their newborns for the first time. She believes that being a doctor requires her to continue learning and  staying updated with the latest medical advancements to provide optimal care to patients.

Stella attributes her success as a doctor to her solid educational background, which has instilled trust in her patients. She is confident her decision to study at UPH's Faculty of Medicine was the right one.

"The quality of the curriculum, the teaching staff, and the facilities at UPH all supported our education as future doctors. The educational programs at UPH are on par with other universities, including state universities. During our studies, we, as students, gained a lot of hands-on experience at Siloam Hospital and other medical facilities, which prepared us to work for both government and international hospitals. It's evident that many UPH Faculty of Medicine graduates have pursued specialist doctor education programs at various state universities in Indonesia," Stella states.

Moreover, Stella is also grateful for her UPH education for the diverse range of activities that encourages talent development and student participation. One of the events she participated in was Medicabaret.

"Medicabaret was a truly memorable experience. It involved students, faculty members, and specialist doctors from Siloam Hospital coming together to perform for a charitable cause. The goal was to showcase that doctors can excel in various artistic domains. We, as students, honed our skills in drama, singing, fashion shows, and dancing. This experience proved to be exceptionally valuable and enjoyable for all of us. When Medicabaret UPH received recognition from the Museum of Indonesian Records (MURI) in 2014, we felt immense pride," recalls Dr. Stella.

As an alumna, Stella hopes that UPH will continue to nurture young, dedicated doctors who make significant contributions to society through healthcare.

"In my view, there's no need to study abroad when we have high-quality universities in Indonesia like UPH," asserts Dr. Stella Kawilarang.
