Gaining Practical Knowledge Through Competition

His experience in joining various competitions during college ushers Glenn Wijaya, UPH’s Faculty of Law cohort 2014 alumni to being recruited by a renowned law firm after graduating. Glenn joined Arfidea Kadri Sahetapy-Engel Trsnadisastra (ASKET Law) s an associate from February 2018 to July 2019. Then, Glenn became Christian Teo and Partners’ associate in August 2019. Even at the beginning of his lawyer career, Glenn is entrusted to handle a few important clients in insurance, financing, fintech, as well as employment.

This trust is further supported by his portfolio in winning those competitions Glenn joined back in his university days at UPH. Various achievements completed Glenn’s CV, from Indonesian Delegate at ASEAN Youth Summit 2017 held by De La Salle University Dasmarinas, Philippines; 3rd winner of Honorable Mention winner UNICEF; best delegation award in Indonesia’s Model United Nation 2016; first and third runner up for Memorandum at International Humanitarian Law Moot Court ICRC 2014 (national round) Jakarta and many more. Being given the opportunity to join this many competitions does not come of its own – a university’s role is important to facilitate its student. Therefore, Glenn was grateful to be able to attend UPH for his undergraduate studies. He admits that UPH does not only provide lectures that were given by experts, but also the chance for its students to join competitions and conferences too.

“I am so proud of how much UPH’s Faculty of Law have achieved in international judicial as well as debate competitions. I am even more proud that UPH has taught me both the skills and competence needed in law, but even more so in integrity,” Glenn explained.

For Glenn, joining competitions has its own purpose, which are to increase knowledge, enlarge networking for future endeavors, and to enrich his CV so that he will have better chances of being recruited and/or applying for graduate school. Winning is not his utmost concern as going to competitions will give him more experiences than not. This is all a part of his strategy in education, besides prioritizing to get good scores on a few courses that he believed will be most useful for his future career, which is a lawyer.

Although Glenn is active in competitions outside campus, his number one priority is still his studies. Graduating with 3.8 GPA, Glenn was chosen to be the best graduate for XXXIII Graduation from Faculty of Law on June 9th 2018. His love for UPH and law became the motivation to study hard.

“UPH was my first choice to get my undergrad degree because I see that UPH has a positive image in the society. Furthermore, UPH’s Faculty of Law is known for being one of the best in Indonesia, producing some of the Professors in law Indonesia has in recent years. UPH has won various national and international awards in Law, too,” says Glenn.

According to Glenn, his motivation in law is further encouraged by his desire to help others when it comes to law, especially because law is a versatile lesson – almost everything in this world is governed by law. Therefore, taking law is the best choice he could take. Glenn’s choice in deciding UPH is right on target: what he gains during his studies turns out to fulfill his expectation and even goes beyond it.
